Located to the east of Cat Ba Island, Lan Ha Bay belongs to the coastal area of Hai Phong and forms part of the wider seascape surrounding Ha Long Bay. While many travelers head straight to the famous neighbor, those who venture further discover that Lan Ha Bay holds a quieter charm of its own.
Spanning more than 7,000 hectares, Lan Ha Bay is scattered with nearly 400 islands rising from the sea as dramatic Limestone Karsts, creating a maze of emerald waters and sheltered coves. Hidden among these islands are more than 130 natural hidden beaches, many of which remain peaceful and untouched.
In 2005, the area was recognized by UNESCO as part of a World Biosphere Reserve, highlighting the ecological value of the region around Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba Archipelago. Thanks to its remarkable landscape, Lan Ha Bay has also become an official member of the World’s Most Beautiful Bays Club and is often referred to as the “second Ha Long Bay”. Yet what truly defines Lan Ha Bay is not just its scenery, but the calm atmosphere that allows visitors to explore the bay at a slower, more intimate pace.

Reaching Lan Ha Bay is relatively convenient for travelers starting from Hanoi. From the capital, the journey takes around 90 minutes by expressway to Got Ferry Terminal, the main gateway leading toward Cat Ba Island. From there, visitors have several ways to explore Lan Ha Bay. You can cross by ferry, take a small boat or speedboat, join a scenic Lan Ha Bay cruise, or travel via the impressive Cat Hai – Phu Long Cable Car, a cable car route known for having the tallest tower in the world. Whichever option you choose, the journey itself already offers sweeping views of the bay’s Limestone Karsts rising from the sea.
Many travelers consider Lan Ha Bay an appealing alternative thanks to its reasonable travel costs and its relaxed atmosphere, making it well suited for those seeking a peaceful escape rather than a crowded sightseeing trip.
The best time to visit Lan Ha Bay is typically between May and August, when sunny skies and calm seas create ideal conditions for swimming, cruising, and kayaking. Another pleasant period is from September to November, when the weather becomes cooler and the bay feels even more tranquil.

Compared to the more dramatic cliffs of Ha Long Bay, the Limestone Karsts of Lan Ha Bay are softened by lush green vegetation that drapes over the islands. The sea here is calm and clear, reflecting the towering rocks and quiet skies. In some areas, boats glide through water caves such as Bright and Dark Cave, where narrow passages open into hidden lagoons surrounded by steep cliffs.
The beauty of Lan Ha Bay has even caught the attention of global travelers and filmmakers. Actor Leonardo DiCaprio once shared a video of the bay on social media, describing the landscape as a real-life paradise.
Across the bay, more than a hundred stretches of natural sand appear between the islands, forming peaceful hidden beaches where visitors can swim, relax, or explore the coastline by kayaking. The quiet waters and scattered islands create a gentle seascape that feels ideal for slow travel and nature appreciation.
One of the most well-known stops is Monkey Island, famous for its two small beaches, Cat Dua 1 and Cat Dua 2. From the island’s hilltop, visitors can climb up for a panoramic view across Lan Ha Bay, where dozens of islands rise from the emerald water.
Nearby, Cat Ba National Park offers a different perspective of the region. Dense forests and diverse ecosystems make it an excellent place for trekking, especially between April and October when the weather is most favorable for exploring nature.
For those seeking a sweeping view of the archipelago, Than Cong Fortress sits at an elevation of about 177 meters above sea level. From this historic viewpoint, visitors can look out across the islands and see famous beaches such as Cat Co 1 and Cat Co 2 stretching along the coast of Cat Ba.
Spending a night on a cruise is the most immersive way to experience the calm beauty of Lan Ha Bay. As the boat glides between hundreds of limestone karsts, the scenery slowly shifts from golden sunset to a sky scattered with stars.
Most overnight cruises include kayaking, swimming stops, cooking classes, and seafood dinners on deck. Cabins are usually equipped with private balconies so you can wake up to the quiet rhythm of the bay. Prices typically range from $145 – $195 per person, depending on the level of luxury and itinerary.

One of the most unique experiences in the bay is exploring Bright and Dark Cave (Hang Sáng – Tối). This cave system forms a natural gateway leading into a hidden lagoon surrounded by towering limestone cliffs.
Visitors can either kayak themselves or ride in a traditional bamboo boat rowed by local fishermen. Passing through the cave’s curved entrance feels like drifting into a secret garden where the water is calm, emerald green, and incredibly peaceful.
Among the most beautiful beaches in the bay, Ba Trai Dao Beach is famous for its soft white sand and crystal-clear water. The three small peach-shaped islets that give the beach its name create a postcard-perfect landscape. Nearby, Turtle Islet rises from the water like a giant turtle resting on the sea. The area is ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and relaxing on quiet sandy shores.
Located just about 10 minutes by boat from Beo Wharf, Monkey Island (Cat Dua Island) is home to a lively population of curious monkeys.
Visitors often hike up the short trail to the island’s viewpoint for panoramic views of the surrounding karst islands. Afterward, you can relax on the island’s small beach or take a swim in the clear turquoise water.

If you prefer a peaceful swimming spot away from crowds, Van Boi Beach is a wonderful escape. The beach is small but incredibly scenic, surrounded by towering limestone cliffs that create a natural amphitheater around the water. The calm conditions make it perfect for swimming, kayaking, and simply floating in the tranquil sea.
One of the oldest fishing villages in Vietnam, Cai Beo Floating Village has been home to generations of fishermen who live in colorful floating houses. More than 500 households still maintain their traditional lifestyle here. Visiting the village gives travelers a rare glimpse into the daily rhythm of life on the water, where fish farms, wooden boats, and family homes gently sway with the tide.
Hidden deep inside Cat Ba National Park, Viet Hai Village feels like a quiet world apart from the busy coast. Visitors often reach the village by boat and then cycle along small paths through forests and rice fields. Traditional houses, friendly locals, and the surrounding mountains create an atmosphere of simple, rural charm.

In contrast to the crowds of nearby Ha Long Bay, Lan Ha Bay offers a quieter slice of paradise with emerald waters, limestone karsts, and hidden beaches waiting to be explored. Whether you choose a relaxing cruise, a kayaking adventure, or a peaceful escape on Cat Ba Island, this bay promises a serene side of Vietnam’s famous seascape. Plan your journey and experience one of the most beautiful coastal destinations in northern Vietnam.

I have traveled a lot as a geography professor and dealt with many tour operators. You are one of the best tour operators who can take so much concern and care about customers. I must congratulate you on your good organization and care to minute points. Thanks for the mobile phone you provided to us and SIM cards you provide to all of us (29 cards, I know they are not cheap), it was an excellent convenience for us. It was a brilliant idea and we really appreciated knowing there was someone we could contact at any time should we need to. We love your welcome dinner at Binh Quoi village, where we enjoyed rich traditional southern Vietnamese cuisine with musical accompaniment provided by local folk musicians. We were very interested in the traditional Vietnamese wedding in Binh Quoi and we never forget the “Gong show” in Buon Me Thuot. Once again, thank you very much for great job”.
